Use cases for mock client IDs
Mock client IDs are realistic-looking identifiers that identify nothing real — and that makes them ideal wherever you need believable customer data without touching real customer data.
1. Seeding test databases
Populate a development or staging database with a few hundred client records. Generated IDs give every fixture a plausible identifier, so foreign-key relationships, joins and lookups behave like production from day one.
2. Testing CRM-style interfaces
Search boxes, client profile pages, merge flows and export features all need IDs to chew on. A generated batch reveals layout bugs (long UUIDs overflowing a column), broken search, and export-format issues before real data is involved.
3. Demos and sales presentations
An empty client list kills a demo; a real client list is a privacy incident. Mock IDs fill the gap — a believable customer roster for screenshots, videos and live walkthroughs.
4. Documentation and API examples
Tutorials read better with concrete values. Showing GET /clients/CLT-8X4K2Q teaches more than GET /clients/{id}, and readers can copy the example without hitting anyone's real record.
5. Data-import and migration practice
Practice CSV imports, deduplication routines and merge scripts on mock data. If the script mangles something, no real customer record suffers — and you learn exactly how the tool handles your chosen ID format.
Where mock IDs do NOT belong
- Production databases — real systems must issue their own IDs with enforced uniqueness.
- Anywhere uniqueness matters across batches — the generator only dedupes within one batch and keeps no memory between visits.
- Security contexts — mock IDs are not secrets, tokens or access credentials.
The rule is simple: mock IDs are for systems and skills, never for statements about real people or real records.
